| Directly at the entrance
of the farm you will see a nearly finished building, a small hospital for
the surrounding population. First Silvia started to build this place from
her own money, but an accident happened to a young man, a friend and member
of Enmaco. He was knocked by the Brookside Co. Car, who´s insurance
company, up to now, was not able to pay back any money for the last 3 years
!? Silvia payed the money for an operation, a lot of money - the money
that was supposed to pay the hospital ...
For two years the hospital is
waiting desperately for help (about 10.000 Euros) to be completed. After
completing, it was supposed to be handed over to the community and the
ministry of health.
Directly on the side, we
are planing to build an office of ENMACO, where, together with the hospital
staff we can hold lectures and educate the patience (while they are waiting)
about AIDS - H.I.V., about possibilities of Mosquito reduction, as well
as other sicknesses which spring from missing hygiene. Silvia believes
very strongly, that the main reason of many sicknesses is found in the
constant destruction of nature, through negative civilasation influence
and the poverty born out of this. Education is already happening, but in
a scientific way and speech, that is totally not understood by the
largest part of the people.
A simple language - education
through pictures - direct contact to the needy - to schools - to far away
villages. We talk about : Malaria / Hygiene / Environmental
protection and many other problems ...
It is our aim to live an
example, how to harmonize with nature, live from it, raise the life standard
without destroying our environment. Some small activities we have started,
have met with great interest and have been accepeted.

Lake Chem Chem

1. Nearby the farm and
village, there is a lake, in great danger to dry out completely in the
near future. Farmers had cut the bush and trees of the hilly area for new
maize fields, overfishing had happened, using forbidden too tight nets,
uncontrolled cowherds brought dirt to the lakes border.
We immediately alarmed some
bigger NGO´s (non governmental organisations) and together we try
to save the lake. Our part of the work: we started building a fishpond
to show the people an alternative. They could raise their own fish - and
Thailapia - fish is also a good way to control the mosquito population,
since it's larves are the best food for those fishes.
We working together with the Ministry of Agriculture, we
want to lecture people about other ways and
sorts of vegetable-planting, because through the onesided
and constant maize farming, the ground is washed out and in the rainy seasons
heavy erosion is happening, the sand is filling the natural raincatchments
- the lake suffers.
2. We lecture farmes about
the importance of wildlife protection. Still, eagles are shot and land
in the cooking pot. Snakes are killed on sight, and therefore mamals multiply.
We go to schools and have meetings with people (a translater is always
with us, so we can talk to them in their native language). We try to explain
the connections how snakes can be useful and that they, as well as birds
of prey, are an important part in the balance of nature.

In the 2 ½ years
as a director of the Falconry of Kenya in Malindi, Silvia Pirelli
learned enough, that she hopes now to help a lot of animals in distress.

3. We
are planing a rescue center for birds of prey and other animals. Injured
animals, when healed, will be returened to freedom. Through lectures we
are aiming for a better understanding between man and animal.
This sentence was written on a wall of a shop near Maralal
in Samburu land by Silvia, where she lived a few years. In this area she
planted 250 trees. Two years she found it again - the trees are big now.
4. Our camp is existing already,
waiting for ornothologists, doctors environmentalists to visit us. Through
this careful selected tourism, we hope to make better the standard of living
for the villages around us, especially since we always encouarge the visitors
to promote a few further projects, as for example, a school near by.
Sponsorship for schoolchildren. Purposely we are keeping
this kind of help very small - normally done by big organisations - it
is hard to control and this is why we prefer to do it directly - from sponsor
to child or school of the child. We will only act as a contact and check
a few times, if necessary. If the demand to help schoolchildren is very
high, then we will have to rethink, how we shall handle it. So far, I myself
have pushed already 3 children through school - and organised 3 sponsors
lately, but there are a lot more looking for help. Informations on request.
Of course we have dreams of what to do in the future -
how about a nursery ??? A maize meal mashine? A sort of library? At the
Farm we are preparing a botanic garden and we plant a lot of indigenous
trees, flowers, that normally grow only in town-gardens ... so much
more to do ....come and help us....
